BMW I Vision Dee

BMW came back to CES in January 2023 in bold fashion with their striking new concept vehicle, the I Vision Dee. This latest concept from BMW gives us a glimpse into the future of their Neue Klasse of vehicles, set to arrive in 2025. According to Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW’s global head of design, these vehicles will represent a significant advancement in electric mobility, sustainability, and digital technology. He describes the 2023 i Vision DEE concept as a simplification of core BMW design elements. “DEE” stands for “Digital Emotional Experience.”

Colour

The I Vision Dee has the ability to change its colour through the use of a technology called “chameleon paint”. The secret lies in the car’s 240 individual “E Ink” panels that allows the exterior to change colour depending on the angle at which it is viewed or the lighting conditions. In fact, the car boasts the ability to showcase up to 32 different hues, providing an almost infinite array of possibilities for pattern creation. And the colour-changing capability can be controlled by the driver through to infotainment system. Whether you’re looking to make a bold statement or simply want to stand out from the crowd, Dee has got you covered.

The Design

When designing Dee, the team at BMW had a clear vision in mind. They aimed to create a vehicle that embodied the concept of “reduced geometry,” where the focus was on the digital aspects of the car rather than its overall shape. This theme of reduction can be seen throughout the car, from the augmented reality displays that are activated by voice commands to the use of special touch-sensitive materials on the dashboard.

Despite this emphasis on digital technology, BMW executives assure that the company has no intention of completely eliminating traditional switchgear. Instead, they have conducted extensive research on which switches are most frequently used and under what conditions. With this data, they are able to optimize the placement of both touch and physical buttons in a practical, real-world manner, ensuring that the driver’s experience is as seamless as possible. It’s not just what looks logical or orderly on paper, but what works best in the real-world.

The Technology

DEE is a technological marvel. One of its standout features is its advanced autonomous driving capabilities, which have been rated at Level 4. This means that the car is able to drive itself in most situations, but still allows the driver to take control when needed. The vehicle is equipped with a combination of cameras, lidar, radar, and ultrasonic sensors that work together to gather information about its surroundings, which is then processed by its onboard computer to make driving decisions.

The i Vision Dee also boasts a large central display screen, which serves as the primary interface for the driver and passengers to interact with the car’s various systems, including navigation, climate control, and entertainment. This allows for a more intuitive and user-friendly experience, as all the controls are easily accessible from one central location.

Eco-Friendly Performance

Under the hood, Dee is powered by an electric drivetrain that generates a staggering 300 kW (408 horsepower) of power, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 kms in just four seconds, making it one of the fastest electric vehicles in its class.

With an impressive range of 600 kilometers on a single charge, the I Vision Dee allows the driver to travel long distances without the need for frequent stops to recharge. This range is made possible thanks to an advanced power management system that optimizes energy use and maximizes the car’s range.

The vehicle also features an advanced regenerative braking system that captures energy during braking and uses it to recharge the battery. This not only extends the car’s range, but it also reduces the need for charging, making it even more convenient for daily use.

Needless to say, we are so excited to see what the future holds for this iconic vehicle brand and the technology they are implementing into their vehicles. To learn more about this new technology, visit BMW Canada’s website.
