EV Range Comparisons
Electric vehicle ranges come in different lengths depending on the model, battery size, and more. Each range type suits different driving needs, from city commutes to long road trips.
What is EV Range, and Why Does It Change?
EV range refers to how far an electric vehicle can travel on a single full charge. The range changes from vehicle to vehicle because of the battery size, vehicle size and weight, driving style, weather, and road conditions. Larger batteries have longer ranges, while smaller EVs with smaller batteries provide shorter ranges for city driving.
Electric vehicle manufacturers categorize EVs into three range categories: short, medium, and long range. Understanding range is important to help drivers plan their routes and charging stops based on their driving needs and travel distances.
Short Range
up to 200 km
Electric vehicles with smaller batteries have shorter ranges. These vehicles are ideal for city drivers looking for a more affordable EV, who commute shorter distances and want faster charging. This range benefits drivers with access to frequent charging stations and offers lower vehicle costs.
Mid Range
200 km - 400 km
Medium range electric vehicles are great for drivers with a mix of urban and highway driving, offering a balance between affordability and versatility. It’s perfect for those who may need to take occasional longer trips but don’t drive extensive distances daily.
Long Range
400 km +
Long range electric vehicles are best for frequent highway drivers or those taking long road trips. This range provides greater flexibility for travel, reducing the need to frequently recharge, and is best for those living in areas with fewer charging stations.
What effects range?
Driving Style
Aggressive acceleration, high speeds, and heavy braking can all lower an EV’s efficiency, reducing its range. By driving in a smooth manner and using regenerative braking, you can conserve energy and extend your vehicle's range.
Vehicle Weight
Carrying extra passengers or cargo, or towing heavy objects increases weight, which can drain the battery faster. To maintain full range, avoid overloading the vehicle with unnecessary weight.
Weather Conditions
Cold or extremely hot weather can reduce battery efficiency and change range. Preconditioning your EV or parking it in climate-controlled areas can help extend your range.
